Excerpt:

I heard it first: the loud high-pitched scream of a child. It was Adelaide. No doubt in my mind. I took off running in the direction of the sound, west. Her screams didn't diminish in the slightest. “Adelaide!” I called, hearing the ear-piecing scream of a child. She sounded afraid. My heart pounded and my nerves wrestled with me. There was nothing I had to be frightened of. Adelaide was okay, she was screaming, right? That had to be a good sign?

“Olivia!” Her voice answered me with another shrill scream as I tore through tall grasses, running towards the stream where I'd been just before our last council meeting. I could hear Collins lag behind me, trailing in my footsteps. He wasn't far but he wasn't as fast either.

“I'm coming,” I answered, my knees lifting higher as I stopped dead in my tracks, finding a bloody corpse. I glanced up, seeing Adelaide bent over the body, her clothes covered in blood. Her cheeks flushed and eyes filled with tears.

“He's dead!” She wailed as I bent down to pick her up, trying my best to shield her from what she'd seen, though I knew it was too late.

I could hear Collins’ muttered curse as he finally caught up, seeing the disfigured corpse. “This isn't good,” he rasped, glancing from me to the little girl. “Take her home, get her cleaned up. We're having an emergency meeting this afternoon,” he announced. “There's an outlaw near Shadow.”

Story Line: This book seemed like a cross between the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan, Significance by Shelly Crane, and Storm by Brigid Kremmerer. This book had some greek mythology, which I love, it had paranormal elemental powers, which I love to read about, and it had soul mates, which I absolutely adore reading about. The concept of the book was well thought out and the story line was easy for the reader to following along with.

Writing: The book was written in both Brielle and Jace's perspective, which is something I love in books. The readers get an inside look into both Brielle and Jace's inside thoughts and emotions. Sometimes the same scene is described in both their perspectives, which just makes the scene complete and utterly amazing. I loved Nikki Narvaez's choice to write in both perspectives and it definitely made me love the book more.

Characters:
Brielle: I loved reading about Brielle character from the beginning and especially through out the book because of her resilience. All the obstacles and challenges that were thrown at her and yet she still bounced back and managed to keep herself together and fight back.

Jace: Jace was the perfect balance between badass, romantic, protective, cocky, and gentlemanly. I definitely knew that I would love his character since the second chapter, where we get introduced to him. I just have to admit that if I had to spend an eternity with someone without aging I would definitely consider Jace, plus I just love his name too.

Excerpt:
"He stepped closer, only a couple of feet away from me. He smelled heavenly, like rain and citrus. “Every night. I've been trying to figure out a way to find you, to save you, and here you are, so close all this time, and I never knew,” he sadly said.
It was my turn to step closer. Tears pooled in my eyes as I said, “I didn't think you existed. I hoped that you did, but I thought I was crazy to believe that I could find you.”

I reached out my hand to touch his face. When I did, a jolt of electricity sparked between us, spreading what felt like burning honey throughout every inch of my body. What was happening to me? Whatever it was, I didn't want it to stop; it was one of those pains that felt amazingly good, almost addictive. Jace's eyes widened as an astonished smile spread across his face. “Unbelievable,” he said as he grabbed a handful of my curls at the back of my head, pulling my face to his to crush his lips to mine.

His kiss was desperate, just like his gaze in my nightmares, only multiplied. I opened his mouth with my tongue, tangling with his as our passion increased. I had never had a kiss come close to this one, and it had just started. He tasted exotic, a subtle sweetness present as he caressed my tongue with his. I clutched his shirt, twisting it in my hands as I tried to pull his body to become one with mine. Heat rushed in-between my thighs and pooled there, sending tendrils of burning warmth up my stomach. I never wanted this to end; the world could stop turning right now, and I would be oblivious, deliriously happy in Jace's lips."

Overall: Overall, this book had all the elements I would want in a book and paired with the writing this book was a definite hit for me. I definitely suggest giving this book a try.

Rating: I would give this book a 9!

The excerpt is always my favorite part because you get a glimpse into the book and you decide if you want to read the story or not. This excerpt really made me want to read the book so here it is:

“I do not want to give an interview to the Dallas Morning Journal’s most ruthless investigative journalist, just so he can write one of his infamous exposés. He’s a glorified dirt digger.” With each word Audrey lowered her voice.

Though hidden in shadows, Audrey could see the figure smile, or more precisely the cheeks rise, in a mocking grin. He wasn’t tall, maybe an inch higher than her, but something about his air that screamed “dare me.”

“Shh. Peacemaker face,” Miranda whispered back just as they approached the dreaded figure.

Audrey took a deep breath, forcing her diplomatic smile once again and braced herself for another onslaught. Ethan finally pushed himself away from the wall and stepped out from the shadows.

Every impression Audrey had of male journalists consisted of pushy individuals in casual and baggy clothing, often appearing as if they had just rolled out of bed and grabbed their bags from a city dumpster.

Ethan’s wrinkled sports jacket and cargo pants certainly fit the stereotype, but everything else about this journalist shook her resolve.
Damn, it has to be illegal to have a smile that charming. The way it spread across his shaven jaw line and cheeks and up to the corners of his light gray eyes stunned her. The color matched his sports coat and glimmered under the studio lights as he reached out to shake hands. Strong hands, hmm. Smooth chin, wide shoulders, and short mahogany hair that curled at the ends. Now Audrey knew how he’d managed to dig up so much dirt in his career. He’d wooed it out of his sources with his slick style.
All his charm and momentum vanished the second he opened his mouth. “Audrey Allen, pleasure to meet you, but I only dig up dirt on the weekends. The rest of the time I just watch the stories unravel themselves.”
“And you just happen to be watching from a shaded corner every time?” Audrey pulled away from his soft hand, amazed by his strong grip. Its warmth countered his cold words.
“That’s what makes me good at my job. Speaking of which, I’d love to catch you in a corner...for a quick chat.” The glimmer in his eye was hard to miss.
Slippery and full of...something. A wannabe Casanova. Another check in the journalist stereotype. If Audrey wasn’t so occupied with trying to dislike him, she might feel sorry for him.
“I’m sure you would,” Audrey murmured, hiding a smirk.
“We’re interested to see how your columns for this runoff election will play out. What will you focus on for these pieces?” Miranda chucked her empty Starbucks cup in a nearby trashcan and flung her ponytail off her shoulder. Hard as nails when she needed to be, and Audrey needed it for this one.
“Well, I like more casual conversations. Fireside chats, so to speak.” He winked his long lashes at Audrey.
What was he searching for, an interview or a date?
“Do you plan on asking the same questions with Wyatt Williams? The same fireside chat?” Audrey let her smirk rise to the surface. The more this guy got on her nerves, the more she liked throwing a curve ball at him.
“I’m equally fair with all my interviews.”
“And equally brutal.” Audrey wanted it to sound like an insult, but why did this feel like flirting? She never bantered with media. What are you doing?
“I’ll be up front, Audrey.” Ethan pulled out a hand recorder. “What ghosts do you have in your closet?” The wink he threw at her didn’t disguise the seriousness of his intent, despite the playful tone.
“Don’t you mean skeletons?” Miranda interrupted. “Nope, ghosts.”
“What’s the difference?” Miranda eyed the recorder.
“Skeletons are only scary. Ghosts from your past can truly haunt you.”
“Aren’t you a little old to believe in ghosts?” Audrey asked with an infectious smile.
“No. They make my job the most entertaining.” The light flashed in Ethan’s eyes and his grin became wicked. Audrey’s heart thudded against her sternum. It wasn’t fair to look that enticing.
“Sorry to burst your pubescent bubble, but Halloween is over.” Audrey smiled through Miranda’s chuckle. But she couldn’t take her eyes off Ethan, assessing his resilience. Would he push and badger just like every other journalist? Were his cojones as big as he flaunted?

Story Line: I found the story line to be refreshing because I had never read a book about a Ferryman or Flames. I especially enjoyed the beginning and the paths that led to the meeting and reuniting of Kaliel and Krishani.

Writing: I found the writing to be a little stats like. What I mean by this is that it almost turned into a history book instead of a fiction book. For me not all the sentences seemed to flow together to make a fiction story, rather the sentences seemed like facts that stand on their own. However, not all of the book was like this and I very much enjoyed the scenes where the writing wasn't stat like.

Characters:
Kaliel: I found Kaliel's character to be a free spirit type of character and rebellious too, which is something that I loved about her character. What I also liked about her character is that she didn't believe she was anything special and I found that to be very relatable and also a very human like quality.

Krishani: I found Krishani to be a refreshing character because he was kind of shy and quirky. He isn't your typical confidant, macho, character and he even admitted that before Kaliel he hadn't talked to a girl. This immediately endeared me to his character.

Overall: This is a fresh new book that is unlike other books you'll probably read. Check it out and judge for yourself if you like it.

Rating: I would give this book a 7 out of 10.
