Review: Lost in Starlight

Book Description Provided by Goodreads: High school is tough. Romance with a sexy alien—even tougher.

Star reporter Sloane Masterson knows she has one helluva story when she witnesses hottie Hayden Lancaster bending forks with his mind.

Like any good journalist, Sloane sets out to uncover the truth, even if it includes a little stalking. When the superhuman feats start to pile up and the undeniable heat rises between them, Hayden has no choice but to reveal his secret: he’s an alien hybrid.

They’re as different as night and day—she’s a curvy, purple-haired, horror junkie and he’s a smoking hot, antisocial, brainiac—yet the intense fascination between them refuses to go away. Even at Hayden’s insistence that dating each other is “off limits” and dangerous, their fiery attraction threatens to go supernova.

Now Sloane’s dealing with creepy government agents, über snobby extraterrestrials, and a psycho alien ex-girlfriend out for revenge. After a crash course on the rules of interstellar dating, Sloane must decide if their star-crossed romance is worth risking her own life....

(GORGEOUS HAYDEN!!!)

Story Line: This story line pulled me in from the beginning with its high pace. Already in the first chapter Sloane suspects there is something different about Hayden and starts investigating what it might be. From there the story gets better and better when Hayden's alien secret is revealed and he and Sloane have to navigate their feelings for each other. One thing I do have to say is that in the first couple of chapters there was too much scene description and characters thoughts as apposed to dialogue. However, after those chapters ended the story picked up again. Also, while reading this book, I was reminded of another similar book, Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout because both have to do with hot alien guys and how they fall for strong and independent human girls.

Relationship: Sloane and Hayden's relationship starts off rocky but that soon changes ;) Sloane is attracted to Hayden because he's gorgeous (lol!) but she's also really curious to find out all of his secrets. Hayden on the other hand doesn't outwardly show that he's attracted to Sloane and acts as if he's irritated with her, which may have to do with the fact that she wants to unearth all his deep dark secrets hahaha!! However, when they both finally admit their feelings to and for each other, they make an awesome secret not so secret couple. Also, I felt that they, as is mentioned in the book, are like an alien version of Romeo and Juliet because of the whole forbidden love thing. While this is used a lot in books, I found that their relationship was still fresh and worth reading!

Characters:

Sloane: From the book description, I knew that Sloane's character was going to be unique! I loved that she wasn't afraid to be herself, even though it means that she doesn't fit in with societies version of "normal". In this aspect, her character reminded me of Raven from Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber. I also thought it was really cool that she had a love for horror movies and that throughout the book there are posts from her blog about her takes on cheesy clichés used in horror films; these posts added an extra spark of personality to her overall character. I also loved the fact that her character is so strong, independent, and determined. She doesn't give up on what she wants, be it information or having a relationship with Hayden. She was definitely a kick ass heroine and I loved reading the story in her POV!!

Hayden: I automatically fell in love with the moody "bad" boy!!! There is definitely a lot more to Hayden than what he usually shows to people and I love that he mostly only shows that side to Sloane. Although he tries to portray himself as a "bad" boy, he is a romantic at heart. With all the sweet moments between him and Sloane, I nearly died of fangirling lol!! I also love that he is protective of those he cares about and even some strangers (animals included) and that he is very much loyal! Hayden isn't afraid of standing up to bullies to protect someone or get in the way of a moving vehicle to save another person or animal!! ;) He's simply awesome and will make you melt: "I am lost in you, with no desire to ever escape." (My exact feelings toward Hyaden hahaha!!!)

Overall: I really enjoyed reading this book!! It was fun and quick to read and the characters made me smile a lot (especially Hayden)!!! The high paced story line along with the budding romance and quirky characters will have you zooming through this book in no time!

Rating: I would give this book a 9.5 out of 10!

Review: Carnelian

Description Provided by Goodreads: Everyone has a past, but for most it isn’t as long ago as Seth Sangre. His past is literally thousands of years ago. Seth’s life led him to the present seeking something that might help him save his country from destruction. He has been in the present for over three years now and just found exactly what he has been looking for. Mari had dreams that college will be a fresh start, one where she would start over and not fall for the good looking player like high school. Unfortunately for her, that’s exactly what ends up falling into her lap on the first day she moves into the dorms. She has to hold to her promise to herself and not fall for the handsome Seth. But he doesn’t plan to make it easy for her. Seth has already marked her as his next conquest. As the semester progresses, Mari learns that Seth might just have a life of his own that’s actually from the past. Suddenly Mari finds her future along with her past put into question. She’s connected to Seth far more than she ever wanted to be and maybe the player isn’t who she thought he was. If Mari can trust her heart enough to follow him, Seth will lead Mari on an adventure of a lifetime and reveal family secrets she never knew existed.

Story Line: Not vampires, aliens, werewolves, or mutants but something completely different!! Three time travelers aided by a Goddess in search of a girl who will help them save their warring nation!! Can you say super awesomely original!?!? I loved the creativity of the story because it made the book a breath of fresh air compared to other books I've read.

Relationship: Marcella and Seth's relationship starts out a little rocky. She doesn't want to be involved with him because she sees him as a player; however, this doesn't deter Seth. As they get to know each other their relationship quickly blossoms but has a slight hitch (hint: through time). They will do anything to be together which I find really sweet.

Characters:
Marcella: The main character Marcella immediately pulled me in. I found her extremely relatable because she's a freshman in college with none of her friends and as a senior myself I will be doing that soon too. Also, the more obvious reason is that she has the same name as me (first book ever that I have read and that the main character is also named Marcella although my name is only with one "l")!!! I enjoyed reading about her perseverance throughout the book especially when it came to learning the truth and Seth!!

Seth: Seth starts out as the player like guy but he sooooo isn't like that! "You'll never be anything less than the love of my life."-Seth!! How much more amazingly awesome can he be?!?! He is absolutely sweet and caring except for a certain part of the book that he had no choice so it wasn't really him but in that part (which I won't say much about so as to not ruin it!) he was so flirty that I had me fangirl for many moments!!!

Overall: I absolutely loved the book because it had time travel, humor, romance, and magic!!! Plus I think I might have found my second literary twin! The story line was creatively unique and the characters were multidimensional and very human like.

Rating: I would give this book a 9.5 out of 10!!!

Review: Calling California

Book Description Provided by Goodreads: Cali Parker is poor. She has a lot on her plate - her father is dying, she's working to help pay the rent, and she's two-years behind in college.

Griffin Brooks is rich. He has not a care in the world - he's acing his engineering courses, his hobby is restoring his fifty-thousand dollar classic car, and he has a different girl on his arm every week.

When Cali sees Griffin on her first day of class, she's immediately smitten and thinks she's found the perfect guy. When Griffin sees Cali at the bank, he immediately forgets the blonde he was with that morning. Then they meet, and their worlds collide.

Cali doesn't belong in Griffin’s world, and he doesn't understand hers. But just when Griffin convinces Cali that their two different worlds can blend, a secret is revealed that tears them apart.

Is their love strong enough to bring them back together, or will their worlds drift further apart?

Story Line: I completely fell in love with the story line from the first chapter!! I loved that the story started out with the anecdote of Cali as a little girl and the little boy at the Christmas party. I thought this story was a modern rendition of Cinderella and Pride and Prejudice because of the fact that the hero who is rich and falls for the heroine who is poor and the heroine misjudges the hero because he is rich. I really loved that it had a fairy tale like quality to the story; yet, it was not boring or predictable AT ALL, especially when the "secret" is revealed!!!

Relationship: Cali and Griffin are immediately drawn to each other!! Cali first sees Griffin in their shared class but Griffin doesn't notice her and Griffin first meets Cali at the bank while she is working. Their relationship has the most change on Griffin because by meeting Cali he automatically goes from being a player to only wanting to be with Cali! Also, their relationship experiences many difficulties. One of these difficulties being the fact that Cali has a problem with Griffin being rich; however, through it all both Griffin and Cali come out being better people.

Characters:
Cali: Her real name is Calista but most people call her Cali, except for Griffin who nicknamed her California. I enjoyed reading about Cali's character; she is sweet, caring, and generous. Her father is dying and she does what she can to take care of him and her mom both emotionally and financially. One of her flaws, to me, was her obsession with money and major dislike of rich people that was drilled into her by her parents. While I understand that it was an important concept of the story, I felt as if almost every word out of her mouth was about money, her lack of it, or her disdain for rich people. However, I do appreciate her character for the strength she showed while her father died, when she found out about the "secret", when her mother lost her job, and when she lost her home.

Griffin: I LOVE HIM!!!! He is sweet, caring, smart, charming, respectful, and humble!!! I loved that his character was down to Earth even though his family is rich and even though he started out as a player, he changed. I loved the chapters that were told in his perspective because it showed how much he cares for Cali and how much of a romantic he is!! I found it really unique that his character admitted to so many feelings that he had for Cali, such as getting butterflies around her. I have not read another book where the main male character admitted that! I just absolutely loved his character from the very beginning and I can't find anything wrong with him!

Overall: I enjoyed the book a lot; although, Cali's constant obsession with money took me out of the story sometimes. However, Griffin always brought me back in with his chivalry and his powerful emotions. The story line was excellent and the characters added a flare to the book that made it very enjoyable!!

Rating: I would give this book a 9 out of 10!!!

Review: Picture Perfect

Book Description Provided by Goodreads: Being the daughter of a big-city mayor, twenty-one year old Skye Summers has giant shoes to fill in her first real job out of college. With the public spotlight on her family, and her dad’s expectations running high, she jumps at the chance to work side-by-side on an important project with her sexy new boss.

Playboy entrepreneur Landon Steele has built a successful entertainment PR firm and broken more than a few hearts along the way. He’s counting on his enthusiastic new assistant to help him expand his business into LA… until he discovers she’s a pampered rich girl who’s in the public spotlight as much as his famous clients. Still, he agrees to give her a chance, and soon the two are heating up the bedroom as well as the boardroom.

But when Skye’s ex-boyfriend threatens to reveal a dangerous secret from her past, her job, relationship with Landon, and her father’s career are suddenly all on the line. Will she be forced to leave Landon? Or will she pursue her heart, regardless of the cost?

Story Line: The story pulled me in from the very beginning because of its powerful start with Skye and Vic fighting. From there, it just got even better with the steamy introduction of Landon and the surprise twist that he is Skye's new boss. I also loved that the author admitted to incorporating events from her life into the book because it just made the story seem more realistic!

Relationship: Skye and Landon's first meet at a bar and are automatically attracted to each other. Later on they find out that they are now coworkers and Landon being the boss doesn't act on his feelings for Skye. Overall, Landon and Skye's relationship transitions from both of them ignoring their feelings for each other, to acting on said feelings, and finally to accepting their faults and the other person completely. They have a sweet relationship and it was fun to read about their discovery of that relationship!

Characters:Skye: Skye's character is strong but most of all she is protective of those she loves. She has spent all of her life in the spotlight because of her father's political career and this has taught her to be responsible. I found it really admirable and relatable that she would sacrifice so much for her loved ones, especially after everything she has already endured.

Landon:
Although Landon's character starts off as a player, he can't help but want a relationship with Skye. This quality made me like his character from the beginning because it showed that he wasn't a douchebag; however, what really made me fall in love with Landon was his protectiveness for Skye (and his name hehehe!!!). He comes to her rescue more than once and sweeps her off her feet, while still trying to remain respectful as a boss by not overtly showing his feelings towards her. I loved his manners, his love of cars, his protectiveness, his charm, his intelligence, and his looks!!

Overall: The characters are fantastic and the author brings so much life into them that I couldn't help but enjoy reading about their lives and root for them as well. Also, the story's pace was perfect and the two plot twist near the end of the book really kicked up the heat and the pace of the book to make a great ending to a fabulous book!

Rating: I would give this book a 9 out of 10!!

Review: Dark Metropolis (Giveaway Included!!!)

Book Description Provided by Goodreads: Cabaret meets Cassandra Clare-a haunting magical thriller set in a riveting 1930s-esque world.

Sixteen-year-old Thea Holder's mother is cursed with a spell that's driving her mad, and whenever they touch, Thea is chilled by the magic, too. With no one else to contribute, Thea must make a living for both of them in a sinister city, where danger lurks and greed rules.

Thea spends her nights waitressing at the decadent Telephone Club attending to the glitzy clientele. But when her best friend, Nan, vanishes, Thea is compelled to find her. She meets Freddy, a young, magnetic patron at the club, and he agrees to help her uncover the city's secrets-even while he hides secrets of his own.

Together, they find a whole new side of the city. Unrest is brewing behind closed doors as whispers of a gruesome magic spread. And if they're not careful, the heartless masterminds behind the growing disappearances will be after them, too.

Perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare, this is a chilling thriller with a touch of magic where the dead don't always seem to stay that way.

Story Line: I story line pulled me in from the very start! I thought that it was a really interesting concept and I liked that it incorporated zombies to give it a fresh twist. I loved that the story automatically pulled me in and introduced magic and the glitzy club. I loved that it was told in all three of the characters perspectives; however, it got a tad repetitive with Thea's inner monologues.

Relationship: Freddy and Thea's romance isn't stressed as much in this book as romances are in other books, which I enjoyed reading about. It let me focus on the plot of the book and what was happening with the character. However, the relationship that was talked about in the book was really sweet and I loved reading about how both characters started to trust each other and opened up to each other. I think the highlight of their relationship, for me, happened at the end of the book!

Characters:
I really enjoyed reading about Thea character. I found her to be a strong heroine, especially with her drive for answers. I also really loved that Freddy was the mysterious and magical guy because his character fit great with the whole concept of the book. Plus after reading the book, I fell for his character! Overall, I have to say that I loved Nan the most! She added a new perspective to the story and I loved the spice she brought to the book with her awesome personality!

Overall: I really enjoyed reading this book and even though it was tad bit too plot oriented, I would say that it was a good read!

Rating: I would give this book an 8 out of 10!

Review: Forever Layla (Excerpt&Giveaway Included!!!)

Book Description Provided by Goodreads: What if the woman you envied most is the person you are destined to become?

In 1994, high school senior David Foster was the lackey and soundboard geek for his best friend's grunge band. During spring break, the band lands a dream gig playing at a motel in Myrtle Beach, SC. David expected all the girls to ogle the guys on stage, but when a beautiful blond "Bond Girl" approaches him and calls him by name, he's shocked to find out she knows more about him than a stranger should.

She even knows about his notebooks and his visions of time travel.

What she thought was a quick time-travel-sightseeing trip takes a surprising turn when she meets the young adult version of the man she'd heard stories about as a child. His fairy-tale romance with the woman he'd loved, Layla, inspired her to accept nothing less than a love just as strong...but hopefully not as tragic. When she won't tell the younger version of him her name, he calls her Layla--and the world as she knows it changes forever.

Storyline: This story line intrigued me just from the description but when I started reading the book it got even better. Within the first chapter I was hooked and I liked that it started out being told in mostly David's perspective, which then switch to mostly Layla's perspective. The whole concept of time travel in this book was really fascinating! Saying that, I have to give credit to Ms. Lee's writing because this book took the confusing subject of time travel and everything that goes with it and turned in into an enjoyable, cohesive, and easy to follow along story line! I loved how at the end of the book the story line makes a complete circle to the beginning and although this may seem strange or even incorrect, while reading the book this makes complete sense. While reading the book, I was reminded a little bit of the movie Meet the Robinsons, except in this case a person from the future goes to the past and finds what she has wanted all her life, true love.

Characters:
David:
I absolutely  fell in love with the quirky teenage David from the beginning! He's just starting to grow into himself and he's still trying to figure out who he is as a person, when he meets Layla. I felt that 1994 David was a little oblivious to things yet so full of hope and ambition. And while I love that David, I have to admit that I love 2016 (older) David so much better! It might just be a personal preference but I love that this David is more mature, loving, and sure of himself. The quality that I love most about this David is his devotion to his work, which is actually devotion and love for Layla! *swoons hahaha*

Layla:
I found Layla character to be so strong that it was inspirational. She already knows that one day she'll have to leave the love of her life and her son; yet she doesn't change anything about her life because she knows how that could change the future. Also, she willingly goes into a marriage where she knows that she'll have to be strong for David, his dreams, and the people of the future. She is constantly carrying around the truth of will eventually happen to her yet she doesn't let anyone know and she lives everyday to the fullest and loves her family with all her being. I loved her ending in the book and couldn't have wished for anything better!

Overall:
I absolutely love this book!! However, I have to say that while the ending was awesome and touching, I would love to know more about what happens with the characters next. Overall though, the characters and the story line are fantastic to read about so much so that this book went by really fast! Plus I loved the little detailed touches scattered throughout the book that incorporate the characters and time travel (will make complete sense when book is read *little incentive to read the book lol!*), they make it really fun for when rereading!!!

Rating: I would give this book a 10 out of 10!!!

Excerpt:

When a shadow loomed over the board, I didn’t even bother to look up. “Step away from the sound system.”

“David?” a soft feminine voice spoke my name.

I glanced up to see the biggest brownest eyes framed by the longest blackest lashed I’d ever seen. I glanced down to focus on the rest of her. The form fitting black dress she wore hugged every curve down to her toned and tanned legs. My gaze trailed on down to her fancy black heels and then back up at her face. She was hot...like model hot. I couldn’t blink or think as I stared at her beautiful face framed by large amounts of blonde hair and a pair of large hoop earrings. She didn’t look like the other girls with her eye makeup, glossy pink lips and the way her hair was puffed up and styled. She looked like she had just stepped out of one of the James Bond movies Dad and I liked to watch on TV...

“It is you.” A look of pure wonder and amazement lit her face. She blinked, making her thick and extremely long lashes flutter like butterfly wings. “I can’t believe it. You wear glasses now.”

I pushed them back on my nose self-consciously as I put away my inhaler. “Yeah, like since the third grade.” I eyed her up and down once more and worked hard to remember to breathe. “Do I know you?”

“Kind of...Well not really. I’m...” she shifted her eyes to the side without moving her head and bit her lips like she needed to remember something and stopped for a moment before she continued. “Ugh! I suck at this. You’ll never let me do this again if I mess this up.” She shook her head and then turned her attention back to me. “No, you don’t know me, but I know all about you. Let’s just put it that way.” Her grin said something was up.

EXCERPT:
He snaps his fingers, bringing my attention back to his face.

He mouths something that I can’t make out. I shake my head.

He creeps closer. I notice a few other things about him. Like the gun that he’s holding in one hand and some kind of knife in the other.

My eyes widen in understanding.

He’s here to save us.

I peer to my right and left. No one else is paying attention to him. I turn back to him.

“Where are they?” he mouths again.

I nod toward the cabin where Ms. Burgess is screaming.

“How many?” he mouths.

“Three,” I mouth back to him.

He nods and goes back into the woods.

No, I want to yell. Come back, don’t leave us here.

I’m about to do just that when he returns with another man, this one older, but similar looking. They creep closer to us, their eyes scanning everything around them. As they come closer I see the rifles strapped across their backs, the guns in shoulder holsters, the knives strapped around their legs and pistols in their hands. I want to cry.

If anybody can save us from the Tanners it’s them.

The tickle of a tear is on my cheek. I use a shoulder to wipe it away.

I don’t say a word as the younger one crouches behind me and uses his knife to cut through the ropes that bind my wrists. The other man goes behind MJ to do the same. I see him whispering something to MJ and MJ nodding in response. Once my hands are free, he moves down to my ankles and begins to saw away at the ropes there.

He glances up to me, his eyes focused squarely on mine. I have a hard time looking away and I think that’s his intention. “What’s your name?”

Instead of my name a cry escapes my lips.

“It’s going to be okay,” he says, still sawing away at the ropes. He takes a quick peek to his right, where the other man is working to free MJ’s feet. “My name is Jason, but all my fraternity brothers call me JC.” He attempts a smile. “You can call me JC.”

“I…I’m not your frat brother,” I say, in a stutter, as confusion clouds my mind. “I’m a girl.”

Why did I point that out?

“Really? I hadn’t noticed.”

“Huh?” I’m as confused as ever.

With my feet free, he crawls quickly up to my side.

“Are you still with me? You look like you’re about to freak out and bolt.”

I nod. Yes I’m okay and yes, I’m going to run.

“Stay with me sweetheart,” he says, in a rush. “I’m going to give you this knife and you’re going to free the other girls. After they’re free, I want you to take them where you first saw me, okay? Behind those trees are some backpacks, you wait there for us. Do you hear me?”

Yes.

“Answer me. Do you understand what I want you to do?”

“But what if you don’t make it. They can kill you,” I whisper. I can’t cover up the fear that is smothering me.

The smile he gives me this time is genuine, not at all forced, and all I notice are the deep dimples in his cheeks. “We got this.”

And for some reason I believe him. “Okay.”
